Science Building Addition and Renovation
Eastern New Mexico University, Portales, NM
2010

Size of Project: 40,000 square feet

VHGA renovated the 1940’s era Science Building and designed a 10,000 square foot laboratory addition. The new addition faces the campus and creates a connection to the campus circulation flow. The brick used on the original structure was used for the addition, melding the old and the new into a cohesive building design. The laboratory addition complements the original structure in scale, detailing, and material and creates a new, strong, identity for the science building into the future.

Designed to encourage interdisciplinary interactions, collaborative teaching, and flexibility of uses, the new facility consists of a variety of teaching and research caliber classrooms, labs, support facilities, storage areas, and offices. The Science Building has three “smart” classrooms with state-of-the-art A/V systems and wireless internet connections. The building consists of a 125-student classroom, two 50-student classrooms, and additional classrooms, seminar rooms, and autoclave equipment. Controlled natural light is brought into the building. Flexible teaching spaces meet current needs while accommodating future change.
