Student Union Building (SUB) Renovation and Addition
University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM
2004

Size of Project: 150,000 sf Renovation / 37,00 sf New

The SUB was totally gutted and reorganized. Exterior walls were removed and reconfigured to provide a transparency between the indoors and outdoors and a new, 3-story interior atrium revitalized the building. The interior of the 3-story SUB is now visually connected.

The VHGA design team collaborated with the building committee to develop an organized circulation flow, realistic space allocations, logical department adjacencies, consolidated support services, and a new interior organization. with all services organized around the atrium.

All spaces are fresh, flooded with natural light, and open. Exterior courtyards, plazas with shaded seating areas, and new entries extend the SUB into pedestrian pathways. An enlarged Conference Center includes distance learning hookups, meeting rooms, and meal service staging areas, and a 200-seat multi-use theatre.
